This is Bridger, he came with the name and is used to it and we're used to calling him that so I think we'll keep it. Though I may have called him Bigby, (Big B as in Bridger) once or twice or Brigadoon, but Bridger is what he knows...
He's just a wee pup! Weighing in about 185lbs. and will likely have another growth spurt before he's done growing. He's a Great Dane who came to us due to some major life changes for his previous owner and though it was not what she wanted to do she felt it was in his best interest. She had several options of places for him to go, but she chose us and we said we'd give it a try. As far as I'm concerned he's welcome to stay, he's an AWESOME dog! I told myself to try not to get too attached, as he may not stay, but I simply cannot help myself, this dog ROCKS! He's HUGE but is so gentle and sweet and well mannered, it's be really hard not to. Mom said "You're so smitten with this dog it's not even funny!" ::sheepish grin:: It's true, I am.
He's already bonded with us and had shown his protective side the other day. The kids were out playing and had him with them when Ron came home from work but Bridger didn't know that - yet. Well, Ron and I walked out to see them, but I went in front of the cars and Ron went behind them. Bridger noticed him and jogged up in front of the kids, between them and Ron and growled and quick low growl. Ron spoke to him and I told Bridger it was ok and then he recognized Ron and quickly trotted over tail wagging and greeted him. With the recent home invasion just up the road I was glad of his response.
The kids adore him as much as I do - ok, well almost!
I cannot figure out why my sister says that we spoil our animals..... hmmmm I don't see any spoiling going on here.....

Hi! What fun! Giant dogs are the best! If you have not had one before, though, they are very different than a regular dog when it comes to their growth, exercise and diet. Do you have someone to put questions to? If not, please feel free to email me. We have an Irish Wolfhound and I am always happy to talk about the giant breeds and their care!

I do, thank you. His previous owner/breeder, she and I are good friends and that is why out of a couple options she chose us to place him with.
ReplyDeleteIrish Wolfhound huh?! That's huge! I've only ever seen one, (too much hair for me) but that dog was very cool, huge, but really cool!
I'm glad you have a giant dog resource person! If you ever need someone "his own size" to play with, we'd be happy to meet up with you as we are in Central Maine (maybe it was our Big Guy that you saw??):)

Looks like the perfect dog for your family.
ReplyDeleteLove the saddle.
The dog I saw belonged to the owners (or daughter I believe) of the pet store in Skowhegan... is this you?
ReplyDeleteNo that is not us-however-it would be nice to have a pet store so we could get a discount on dog food!!! :)
