big dog daddy!

Caution! Viewing the following photo may cause a sudden need for a larger vehicle, yard, the need to purchase significantly larger bags of dog food, the need to have a much larger couch and an overall feeling of awww. I make no apologies for this, owning a Great Dane has been one of the greatest joys of my life. View at your own risk...

This is Bridger's most recent litter!

finally and thankfully!

Our first load of hay is in, finally! thankfully! As is usually the case my nephew was on hand to help out and this time so was my sister!! We figured out why families used to be so large, because it took that many people to get all the work done for survival! Here are a few pic from the day!

Yea! it's here! Who's going to make it to the top first?!
Dang! that's a lot of hay!
At first the work seems daunting! It's a labor of love and certainly like money on the bank!

No idea what he said, but he must have thought it funny, look at that sheepish grin!

Two hard working country girls! I love this picture!
Tossing in another bale! Photo credit: Jen L.

Two of the hardest working kids I know!

Working hard!

Bucking hay!
Bridger thought he'd be a big helper so he jumped up onto the wagon, turns out eh, not so much! My sister however was a big help! Thank you Jen!
YEA! We did it! We got it all in!!

Am I a big helper now Mom?
Cap'n Eli's ice cold root beer (which F.Y.I. is made in Maine and just so happens to be the worlds best root beer!) for a hard job done well!
I have a picture of the three of them in the hay loft from every year we've done this. I cannot believe how big they are getting!

It's big enough for Bridger!

Our other truck was......... wellllllllllllllll used and just about dead so it was time for a different one. This is what we got. It was less than what I'd anticipated spending and had less than 100K miles on it, the other one had over 232K!! AND it's big enough for Bridger! lol

for a year now!

It's been an entire year now that we've had this amazing creature to share our lives with. I cannot imagine a day without him in it. Thank you Bridger for being so amazing!

featuring our rockettes... or maybe the rockgoats...

All three mommas....

I have to say I think this is a pretty cool shot. I was just hanging out in the pasture with them the other day and they came over to visit and Galloway came over for a nap. Spice never strayed too far from him, but did take the opportunity to catch up on some grazing since both her babies were together and in one place. Yes, when ever I am in the pasture, yard, vehicle, woods or walk away out of her sight in the barn after milking I am scolded because I too am her baby I'm guessing because I take her milk. Silly goat! In fact Bridger was out there with us and I had him come over and lay down near us and Spice was NOT happy about that, she snorted and stomped her feet then head butted him in the shoulder. She was on duty and was not going to let her babies be gobbled up by a big black goat and human eating ginormous monster! Poor Bridger, he jumped about a foot into the air and wondered what the heck had just happened then looked at me like" Mom! I didn't do anything, I was just laying here taking it in and wham!" I felt bad. Spice hasn't cared for him since arriving and the thing about it is he has never showed any aggression towards any of them. That being said the other goats have gotten used to him and I'm sure she will too.

We're just shy of two months away from Venus kidding (it's twins!) and while she was eating her grain last night Faith and I were watching her belly and could see the babies moving and kicking like crazy, watching her face light up in delight and discovery was worth everything  I do to make this place run.

Since Venus is having twins (and already starting to waddle like a penguin) and Spice already has two babies to take care for, I wonder what she's going to do when there are two more babies within her radar. hmm, should prove to be an interesting summer!

25 - insurance

So I'm making my list of things I'm thankful for, and for today it's certain;y insurance. Ron, as you know, had had surgery recently and ended back up in surgery yesterday because he had sprung a leak from the incision and and we could not get it to stop, after a trip to the ER, three trips to the doc's office and waking up in a pool of blood they decided to go in and see what was going on. UGH! Anyway, I went to pick him up today from the hospital, got home and having been gone for two days made Bridger need a bit of exercise so the kids took him out to run and less than half an hour later Andrew came in and took out a paper towel for Faith whom had just cut her knuckle wide open which required three stitches.  Got home from that and took - I'm kidding. I have to laugh else I'd go insane! So one of the gifts I'm thankful for today certainly is insurance.

Introducing my truckactor

When you're desperate - you punt! I was desperate! I'm about a month behind on planting and I've moved the garden to a much bigger location. The old location was very small for what I want to do and didn't really get enough sunlight because of the huge old oak tree to the west of it. I'm not about to cut that down beside it's the best place for hanging the tire swing.

This is the area that was really overgrown last year, so we ran the pigs in there, and what a wonderful job they did eating the grass, weeds and rototilling by rooting it all up. Nature doesn't like bare open ground so by being a month behind schedule there was lots of bare ground that was fair game as far as weeds and grass were concerned. So I borrowed my brother-in-law's spring tooth harrow (that "old fashioned" as Andrew calls it - piece of equipment behind the truck) having used one with great success before I knew it would work. Only problem was that the wallows or nests that the pigs had made were too deep for me to drive the tractor over with the mowing deck on. I nearly burst into tears out of frustration. I walked into the house defeated and told Ron my woes. He brilliantly suggested I use my truck in 4WD! I never pass up the chance to drive my truck, I LOVE driving it. So I grabbed the keys, a chain that I'd used to haul out some logs (with my truck) a couple years back and went to work. It worked great, I cranked the harrow way down so it would really dig it up and was even able to smooth out all the wallows from the pigs! Once that was done I knew from past experience that I'd be able to pull it with the tractor. Yea!

Now that that was done, (I am forever thankful for the harrow), we could plant! I've got big plans, but have to first see how things go and grow here this year. Andrew has big plans too, he wants to have a vegetable stand. Great idea, right? well we only have 5 people on out entire road and we're so far off the beaten path that he'll likely have to tweak it just a bit. I'm sure he'll figure out a way to work it. Ha! He'll soon have Buckley harness broke and driving and plans to build his own goat cart, he'll likely be driving his cart to all the neighbors veggies in tow - how will they be able to say no to that?! Watch out world, Andrew's coming!

Clearly we did a bit of planting before I was able to get it all harrowed, I'm not the most patient person you know!

And of course they had to be inspected by Bridger, Mr. Potato Inspector.
After the rest of the potatoes were planted; and just for the record was about 10-12 pounds of seed potato, which should produce about 100-120 pounds of potatoes. I don't know who figured that out, but that what I read somewhere so I'm going with it. Anyway, after they were planted Andrew wanted to plant his corn, he loves sweet corn and Indian corn or ornamental corn and had tried desperately to grow it for years in his square foot garden with minimal success. He'd have an unannounced competition with the local dairy farmer as to who's corn would be up first and who's corn was taller and get so excited when he won. This year since we've got a much larger garden he's planted several types and rows of it. I sincerely hope he's successful! And now that I could use the tractor, I did! And Bridger; my faithful sidekick, followed along dutifully. Since this was in fact Andrew's corn I thought I'd let him have ago of harrowing and making a row to plant his corn in. (I was going to let Faith have a go at it too but the rain forced us to get as much in the ground as quickly as possible, I'll let her have a turn next time.)
You want to talk about an excited little boy?! Over the MOON happy!
I think this grin is permanent! He said to me today, "I love being a farmer!" Me too; son, me too.

Faith is such a trooper! It spit rain on an off for most of the afternoon, which incidently is when we were trying to get it planted. I'm not complaining, I'd much rather plant in the rain or spitting rain than the stifling heat we had last week.

Beautiful hands. Just like the young lady they belong to. We were forced to stop planting because the rain got heavier, but tomorrow's weather looks like ti might work. Honestly though if it doesn't too bad for me, I'll have to suck it up and deal with it, I've got to get it planted! We had a wonderful day today; being silly, slightly hucklebuck, working like crazy, making memories and
capturing smiles!

Meet the Cast - Bridger

This is Bridger, he came with the name and is used to it and we're used to calling him that so I think we'll keep it. Though I may have called him Bigby, (Big B as in Bridger) once or twice or Brigadoon, but Bridger is what he knows...
He's just a wee pup! Weighing in about 185lbs. and will likely have another growth spurt before he's done growing. He's a Great Dane who came to us due to some major life changes for his previous owner and though it was not what she wanted to do she felt it was in his best interest. She had several options of places for him to go, but she chose us and we said we'd give it a try. As far as I'm concerned he's welcome to stay, he's an AWESOME dog! I told myself to try not to get too attached, as he may not stay, but I simply cannot help myself, this dog ROCKS! He's HUGE but is so gentle and sweet and well mannered, it's be really hard not to. Mom said "You're so smitten with this dog it's not even funny!" ::sheepish grin:: It's true, I am.
He's already bonded with us and had shown his protective side the other day. The kids were out playing and had him with them when Ron came home from work but Bridger didn't know that - yet. Well, Ron and I walked out to see them, but I went in front of the cars and Ron went behind them. Bridger noticed him and jogged up in front of the kids, between them and Ron and growled and quick low growl. Ron spoke to him and I told Bridger it was ok and then he recognized Ron and quickly trotted over tail wagging and greeted him. With the recent home invasion just up the road I was glad of his response.

The kids adore him as much as I do - ok, well almost!

I cannot figure out why my sister says that we spoil our animals..... hmmmm I don't see any spoiling going on here.....
